Straits Asia has had a formal environmental policy since 1997 and has integrated environmental management into its business planning. The Company has a continual improvement program and all operations are included in this program together with audits of Straits Asia’s exploration activities at varying intervals, usually after major exploration campaigns.
An annual external third party corporate auditing procedure has been in place since 1999, which is in addition to reviews by external independent auditors. Consultants have provided the independent technical auditing expertise in reviewing the Company's environmental performance. Specific independent third party technical audits are also conducted on an as needs basis and include environmental aspects such as the management of marine and aquatic environments (annually), acid mine drainage management, tailings storage facility management and development of agronomic systems in rehabilitation areas.
Non-government agencies such as indigenous community groups, conservation groups, representatives from adjacent communities and other interested parties have also visited and reviewed aspects of Straits Asia’s various operations. Environment Policy
Straits Asua is committed to the responsible environmental management of all of its activities to ensure that the environmental effects are either planned to be avoided or unavoidable impacts are minimised, and where possible, remedied to an acceptable standard.
The key requirements of each business unit’s environmental management system are to: - satisfy all legal obligations imposed on the unit’s activities through leases, licences, approvals, consents or notices;
- develop environmental management plans or similar documents prior to the implementation of its various activities. All important activities are supported by procedures manuals;
- ensure all environmental documentation is closely integrated with each unit’s documentation relating to occupational health and safety, emergency response, plans and site operations and procedures;
- ensure all staff are aware of their responsibilities relating to environmental management and that each employee/contractor has, and maintains, the appropriate level of competency; and
- continually improve the Company’s environmental performance and the environmental management system itself.
The Company is committed to the development of an Environmental Management System for each of the Company’s business units to conform to the requirements of the international Standard ISO 14001. The adoption of the international standard will assist the standardisation of the environmental management and the achievement of "best practice" for all units irrespective of location.
